Mister Squiggle was one of Australia's longest running children's television series, first airing on the 1st of July, 1959. The final episode featuring the creator, Norman Hetherington, aired on the 9th of July 1999. In 1990 Norman was made a Member of the Order of Australia (OAM), for his services to puppetry and television.

The main character, Mr Squiggle was a marionette, with a rigid rod that ran through his hat, controlling his head. Mr Squiggle had a working pencil for a nose, and with this pencil, would draw recognisable pictures from squiggles sent in by children.

Other characters on the show included:

  • Blackboard
  • Gus the Snail, who had a either a TV or a flower pot for a shell
  • Bill the Steam Shovel
  • Rocket, Mr Squiggle's pet rocket
  • A human female assistant. These included Miss Gina (Gina Curtis), Miss Pat (Pat Lovell), Miss Jane (Jane Fennell), Roxanne (Roxanne Kimmorley) and Rebecca (Rebecca Hetherington, Norman's daughter).
